Some hotels have a history. Raffles London at The OWO has a declassified case file. Housed in the former Old War Office in the heart of Whitehall, this was once home to Churchill and Lord Haldane, and a regular haunt of Ian Fleming, who by all accounts did rather too much people-watching here before inventing a certain fictional spy. MI5 and MI6 both operated within these walls for much of the twentieth century, which explains why the building's meticulous restoration feels less like a renovation and more like a very tasteful cover-up.
Guests can take the Spies in Whitehall tour, tracing Churchill's secret Special Operations Executive recruited on site, or settle into The Drawing Room for the Secrets & Spies Afternoon Tea, a culinary nod to the art of espionage. As night falls guests are invited to the hotel’s Spy Bar, an exclusive, clandestine subterranean space, a meeting spot so secretive that phone photography is banned, and the warm, cozy atmosphere is perfect for whispering classified tales late into the evening. A silver Aston Martin sits suspended over the bar, as a quiet nod to Fleming himself, and of course, the Martinis come shaken, not stirred.

Getting three generations to agree on anything is a minor miracle, let alone a shared afternoon of sightseeing.
This is where a little theatrical thinking earns its keep. Our team can arrange a private escape-room-style challenge inside an actual Roman fortress, a treasure hunt through the Louvre pitched as an art history heist rather than an ‘I’m bored…” museum excursion, gladiator training at the Colosseum for anyone under eighteen convinced Rome is "just old buildings," a Harry Potter-inspired trail through London's film locations, and styling and fashion design workshops for teens in Paris that go well beyond a shopfront tour.
None of it feels like homework, all of it sneaks history in sideways, and everyone - from grandparents to grandchildren - leaves with the same story to tell. It's these shared moments of surprise that often become the most treasured family memories.

Namibia has a habit of contradicting itself. At Sandwich Harbour, the dunes don't taper politely into the Atlantic, they simply stop, dropping straight into the surf as if the desert changed its mind at the last moment. Nearby, at Walvis Bay, the lagoon's salt pans turn a deep, improbable pink from concentrated algae, and the flamingos duly follow, thousands of them, in one of the densest gatherings anywhere in Africa.
Pair it with the burnt red dunes of Sossusvlei or the wildlife of Etosha and you have the driest desert on earth doing an unlikely double act with one of its most delicate creatures, all within a few hours' drive of each other.

Soneva Jani, in the Maldives' Noonu Atoll, seems to have taken "expect the unexpected" as a design brief rather than a suggestion. Villa decks come with curved slides that drop straight from the living area into the lagoon below, because apparently stairs were considered a bit dull. Cinema Paradiso, the resort's overwater theatre, screens films under the open sky, and floating breakfast trays arrive at your private pool most mornings, coffee, pastries and all, whether you've fully woken up or not. The real showstopper, though, is the master bedroom's retractable roof, which slides back at the touch of a button to reveal the night sky. Fall asleep counting stars, and if the weather changes its mind, a rain sensor closes the roof automatically while you sleep, no scrambling for cover required. It's the sort of place that reminds us luxury doesn't always have to be serious. Sometimes the greatest indulgence is simply allowing yourself to play.

At Nihi Sumba, getting to the spa is half the treatment. Guests choose a two hour trek through rice paddies and cultural villages, a horseback ride along the coast, or a breezier fifteen minute safari drive, arriving at the secluded, offsite Nihioka Spa to breakfast overlooking the Sumbanese coastline before choosing from a menu of massages, wraps and equine wellness treatments across two and a half to five hours of unhurried indulgence.
Those wanting to properly commit can extend the day at Villa Rahasia, a private hideaway tucked within the Spa Safari grounds, and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean rather than head home at all. It's wellness reimagined - where the journey to relaxation becomes just as memorable as the treatment itself.

The Memory Road
Most itineraries are built to remove uncertainty. The Memory Road does rather the opposite. Created by Thierry Teyssier of Dar Ahlam, this 1,200 kilometre route through Morocco has no fixed script beyond five carefully chosen stops, and deliberately leaves the rest open, the roads between them, the people you meet, the detours that present themselves along the way.
Travelling at the pace of the nomads who first walked it, guests move from desert aridity to lush oases, past millennium-old grain silos and rock paintings, through restored villages that have quietly resisted the modern world's noise. As Teyssier puts it, in a society built on abundance, we've largely forgotten the pleasure that comes from scarcity, the pleasure of anticipation, of musing. His role, he says, is simply to guide travellers toward the beauty already around them, rather than dictate what they should see and when.
It's a journey that gently asks you to let go of certainty, embrace curiosity, and trust that the most meaningful discoveries are often the ones that were never on the itinerary.

A Music-Led Speakeasy Curated by the Rocketman Himself
Elton’s Club, Venice
Airelles Palladio opened on Venice's quieter Giudecca island earlier this year, and from September, its newest addition arrives with a rather famous neighbour attached. Elton's Club, created in collaboration with Sir Elton John, a long-time Giudecca resident, brings an exclusive-entry, music-led speakeasy to the property, complete with a small screening room and the genuine, if unconfirmed, possibility of an impromptu appearance at the piano from the Rocketman himself. It's the sort of hidden detail that transforms an evening into a story you'll still be telling long after you've returned home.

A Letter to ‘Future You’
Bistro Des Lettres, Paris
While most Parisian bistros are content to provide a lovely meal and send you off with a full belly, this one sends you an actual letter, one year later. At Bistro des Lettres in Paris's Saint-Germain-des-Prés, diners are invited to write themselves a note during the meal, a reflection, a wish, a small memory of the evening, which the restaurant then keeps and posts back exactly twelve months on. It's a small, slightly poetic piece of theatre that turns one dinner into two moments, the meal itself and the unexpected reminder of it, and there's something rather lovely about a Parisian bistro that understands memory is the better souvenir.
