The Viking Way: Exploring Norway's Fjords in Scandi Style with Dana
“This part of the world offers something completely different,” Dana reflects. “The landscapes, the light, the feeling of space. It’s unforgettable. Viking Cruises absolutely understands this region - it’s in their DNA! And once you’ve been, you understand why people go back.”
Some journeys shift your perspective quietly, without announcement. Scandinavia has a way of doing exactly that. For Y Travel’s Dana Michael, her first experience of the Nordic world was less about ticking off destinations and more about a gradual unfolding of wonder. Sailing Viking Cruises’ Viking Shores & Fjords itinerary from Amsterdam to Bergen aboard the Viking Vela, Dana returned with a sense of having encountered something genuinely profound. “The whole trip was incredible,” she reflects. “It’s not just breathtakingly beautiful, it stays with you in a way you don’t quite expect.”
In true Y Travel style, the journey naturally wove together so many of our Y Factors: Nature & Sustainability, Taste, Wellbeing, and The Unexpected, each revealing itself in quiet, meaningful ways along the route.
Amsterdam: A Gentle Beginning
Before embarking, Dana and husband Ant spent two nights in Amsterdam, easing into the rhythm of travel in one of Europe’s most atmospheric cities. Days were spent wandering canal-lined streets, where bicycles glide past gabled townhouses and every turn seems to reveal another perfectly framed scene.
At The Dylan, a refined boutique hotel set within a 17th-century canal house, the tone was set early. Elegant yet intimate, it offered a sense of calm just moments from the city’s cultural energy. Days here were the perfect base to explore neighbourhood cafés, galleries and the city’s quietly captivating pace. “It felt like a great way to prepare for the cruise,” Dana says. “You start to slow down, to notice things again. It sets you up for everything that follows.”
A Ship That Becomes Home
Boarding Viking Vela, launched in late 2024, the transition felt seamless. With just under 1,000 guests, the ship is thoughtfully designed to feel both spacious and serene. As they departed the Port of Amsterdam, Dana settled into the gentle rhythm of life onboard as the ship made its way through the North Sea towards Skagen, Denmark’s northernmost town.
“It felt like checking into a beautifully designed Scandinavian hotel that just happened to move,” Dana says.
All-veranda staterooms create a constant connection to the outside world, while interiors are defined by soft textures, natural materials and a calming Nordic palette. There is a quiet luxury in the simplicity. One suitcase, one room, and a horizon that is always changing. “Morning coffee on the balcony, watching the coastline drift past, became part of the ritual,” she adds.
Onboard dining quickly became a highlight. The main restaurant offers regionally inspired menus framed by sweeping ocean views, while Manfredi’s, the Chef’s Table and Mamsen’s Norwegian deli provide variety and depth. “The waffles with brunost were a surprise favourite,” Dana laughs. “It sounds unusual, but it works. Slightly sweet, slightly savoury, and completely addictive.” Meals ashore, from traditional meatballs to open-faced sandwiches, only deepened her appreciation. “Scandinavian food is simple, but it’s done so well. Honest, comforting and incredibly satisfying.”
The sense of wellbeing follows naturally, especially considering the surrounding scenery. The LivNordic Spa - complete with sauna and snow grotto for an authentic Scandinavian wellbeing experience -offers a physical reset, but it is the pace of the journey that has the greatest impact. Days unfold without urgency, inviting guests to truly switch off. “By day three I realised I hadn’t checked my emails in over 36 hours,” Dana says. “That was the real luxury.”
A Scandinavian Odyssey
The 7-night Viking Shores & Fjords itinerary traced a thoughtful path north, each stop offering a distinct perspective on the region.
After crossing the North Sea and spending a day discovering the quaint Danish seaside town of Skagen - particularly loved by artists for its shifting light and windswept beauty - the Vela’s journey continued onward to its Norwegian destination.
Oslo offers an immediate contrast. Modern, design-led and deeply connected to nature, it feels both dynamic and grounded. Dana spent the morning exploring Vigeland Park, home to more than 200 sculptures by a single artist. “It’s quite extraordinary,” she says. “There’s something playful but also deeply human about it.” A visit to the Holmenkollen ski jump followed, its sweeping structure set against forested hills. “Standing there, you can imagine the history, as it was originally built in 1892 and was an Olympic venue when Oslo hosted the 1952 Winter games." she adds.
Kristiansand proved to be one of Dana’s unexpected highlights. A coastal town with an easy rhythm, it invites you to slow down almost immediately. “It draws you in,” she says. “There’s this effortless seaside charm, with soft sandy beaches, a pretty harbour and that relaxed Scandinavian feeling.” Time here is best spent simply wandering, breathing in the fresh sea air and letting the atmosphere settle. “It’s the kind of place that lingers long after you leave,” she reflects. “I’m still thinking about it.”
Stavanger brings a different kind of beauty, its preserved white wooden houses and quiet streets offering a glimpse into Norway’s past, before the journey builds towards its most powerful moment.
Flåm: Nature at Its Most Profound
Arriving into Flåm was an experience in itself. Waking at dawn as the ship glided through the Aurlandsfjord, Dana found herself completely still. Towering mountains rise sharply from mirror-like water, their peaks dusted with snow, waterfalls tracing delicate lines down their faces. “It will forever be a core memory,” she says. “It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.”
From the Stegastein lookout, the scale becomes even more apparent, panoramic views stretching across a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. A gentle walk through Aurland follows, a small, authentic village that feels lifted from a postcard.
The defining experience of this region was a RIB boat safari through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord places, which Dana had independently arranged. The thrilling, high speed excursion places you directly within the landscape, its narrow passageways and towering cliffs creating a sense of complete immersion. “It was pure magic,” Dana says. “It gives you perspective. You feel small, but in a way that makes you appreciate everything so much more. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
A Fitting Finale
The Viking journey concludes in Bergen, a city full of character. The colourful wooden buildings of Bryggen line the harbour, while bustling fish markets and views from Mount Fløyen bring energy and life to the final day.
From here, Dana continued on to Copenhagen for two final nights, extending the Scandinavian experience. Denmark’s capital offers a different rhythm again, blending history, design and creativity with effortless ease. From the storybook legacy of Hans Christian Andersen to the vibrant waterfront of Nyhavn and the city’s renowned culinary scene, Copenhagen feels both cultured and contemporary.
At Villa Copenhagen, housed within a beautifully restored historic building, the journey came full circle. Much like The Dylan in Amsterdam, it is a hotel defined by thoughtful design and quiet elegance, offering a warm and fitting conclusion. “It felt like the perfect final chapter,” Dana says. “A chance to reflect on everything we’d experienced.”
Why It Works
Norway has a reputation for being expensive, and rightly so. Meals, drinks and everyday experiences can quickly add up. Experiencing the region by sea, however, changes the equation entirely.
With accommodation, dining and curated excursions included in Viking journeys, the need to constantly calculate disappears. “You’re not thinking about every coffee or every meal,” Dana explains. “You can just enjoy it, which makes such a difference.”
It is, ultimately, what makes a journey like this so compelling. The logistics are seamless, the experiences immersive, and the sense of discovery uninterrupted.
