Port, Pastéis, and Portuguese Perfection: A Tauck Centenary Celebration

“Experiencing beautiful Portugal for the first time was made that much more special with the incredible service and attention to detail of a Tauck river cruise journey.”

Shelley McWhinney

There’s something truly special about a company that has perfected the art of travel over 100 years. When 26-year old Arthur Tauck first loaded six passengers into a rented Studebaker in 1925, to travel through New England and Canada, he likely never imagined his fledgling tour company would one day be celebrating it’s centenary year hosting by 40 Australian agents (and their partners), on an exclusive river cruise through Portugal’s picturesque Duoro Valley.

Y Travel’s Shelley was privileged to join this exclusive celebration of the Tauck legacy, and from the moment she arrived in Lisbon, it was clear Tauck’s legendary five-star service is no marketing line – it’s the essence of their experience.

The Tauck Difference
Tauck isn’t just about the breadth of its portfolio – over 150 journeys across 70 countries – but its meticulous attention to detail. From airport transfers and gratuities to gourmet meals and unique, insider experiences, everything flows seamlessly so guests can simply savour discovery.
Shelley’s adventure began with two nights at the Four Seasons Lisbon – a stunning property a 15-minute downhill stroll to the heart of the city (though, as Shelley wisely notes, you’ll want a taxi for the return!). With its rare welcome pool, essential in the summer heat, this five-star stay perfectly set the tone for the journey ahead.

Any doubts about Tauck’s style were quickly dispelled by a dazzling welcome dinner at the 18th-century Queluz National Palace. Imagine chandeliers casting a warm glow over elegantly dressed guests while a harpist’s music filled the air – moments like this elevate a trip from memorable to unforgettable.

For Shelley, Lisbon itself was a revelation. The city’s mosaic of charming neighbourhoods, eclectic shops, and vibrant dining scenes invited endless exploration. Tram 28 became a favourite – a mere three euros for a ride through narrow streets where cars give way to the iconic tram, offering a beautifully authentic way to take in Lisbon’s historic architecture.

Hogwarts Inspiration and Medieval Magic
One highlight was the excursion to Coimbra, Portugal’s medieval capital. The centuries-old university and Joanina Library revealed rich academic traditions and a surprising literary link: this very place inspired J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts. The traditional Fado performance – singers cloaked in black – suddenly felt like a glimpse into that magical world.

Cruising the Douro in Style
The heart of the trip was a five-night cruise on the MS Andorinha – Portuguese for “Swallow,” symbolising love and loyalty, as these birds return home year after year. The vessel gracefully navigated the lush Douro Valley with three dining options to suit every mood: a formal à la carte restaurant, a relaxed alfresco dining sundeck, and Arthur’s Café, named after Tauck’s founder.

Shelley’s top-deck suite offered thoughtful design and breathtaking riverside views, a perfect sanctuary after days filled with exploration and indulgence.

A standout moment was the Roaring 20s-themed gala, honouring Tauck’s 1925 origins. Guests, guides, and crew dressed to the nines, dining and dancing as Arthur and his friends would have a century ago. It was a joyous celebration of adventure and timeless elegance.

Adventures Ashore
Tauck’s shore excursions cater to all interests and fitness levels, with a clever rating system from 1 (easy) to 4 (challenging). Whether enjoying a gentle walk through Porto’s Ribeira district or tackling a more active hike for panoramic views, everyone regrouped to drink a toast with a ‘Port Tonic’ – Shelley’s new favourite tipple, blending white port, tonic, mint, and lemon together for a refreshing G&T alternative.

For the adventurous, a 13-mile bike ride through the Vinho Verde region was available on both standard and e-bikes, while those seeking relaxation enjoyed guided wine tastings and cocktail classes at local quintas. The region’s famed wines – from crisp Vinho Verde to rich ports – added a deliciously educational layer to every outing.

The Sweet Side of Portugal
No Portuguese journey is complete without indulging in the iconic custard tart. Shelley’s quest began in Lisbon at Pastéis de Belém – the original, flaky, buttery treat made from a secret recipe over 200 years old - and ended perfectly in Porto at the elegant Castro Café. Her tip? Enjoy them warm for the full sensory experience – a small detail that embodies Portugal’s culinary passion.

Extending the Magic in Porto
Not quite ready to say goodbye, Shelley extended her stay with two nights at the luxurious Yeatman Hotel. Wandering Porto’s stunning streets and charming cobblestone alleys at her own pace, she soaked up the city’s unique blue & white tiled charm. A visit to world famous bookstore, Livraria Lello, an architectural gem and literary wonderland, provided a fitting cultural finale.

A Final, Thoughtful Touch
Even the smallest details matter with Tauck. Each guest departed with a brightly coloured ceramic swallow ornament – a beautiful symbol of their journey on the MS Andorinha and a gentle reminder that they’re always welcome back to the Tauck ‘nest.’

Shelley’s Portuguese adventure embodies everything that sets Tauck apart: flawless service, thoughtful curation, exclusive experiences, and above all, the freedom to focus on making memories, not managing logistics. After a century in business, Tauck has truly mastered the art of transformative travel.
